Clearing up water gas technology misconceptions

Before we go any further, we need to clarify one or more misconceptions in this regard.

Water gas technology is becoming a hot, hot and hot topic these days - and why not, with the fuel prices reaching the roof and all. It seems that everyone is saying that this is the solution to our fuel dependency problems. We can finally run our cars on tap water alone - a concept that we have earlier though to be a pipe dream and nothing more. But is this really possible?

One: the water gas technology cannot afford us the power to run our cars on mere tap water alone - at least not on the commercial level. Rather, we use H2O (also known as HHO) as a fuel economy booster; or some element we could use to maximize our car's fuel use. We still need to buy gas with this technology.

In automobile history, the only time that water has successfully been used as fuel source was when engines ran with steam power. The locomotive industry used this extensively for years. However, steam powered engines are cumbersome and bulky, and needs a large storage of fuel source like coal or wood. These are definitely not something you can install in modern day cars.

Two: not all ready made engines can use water gas technology. Most, if not all of these said engines will have to undergo necessary makeovers.

Three: although there are many online companies now offering do-it-yourself manuals on how to convert your car's engine to something that can use the water gas technology, it would still be better to have a professional mechanic or engine builder perform the necessary changes. Otherwise, you will only be putting your car (and you!) in danger.

How does water gas technology really work?

To simplify matters, we are going to couch this explanation in layman's terms. Water gas technology would obviously need more specialized equipment to process the water as fuel economy booster. You would need a water reservoir to place in your tap water; an HHO generator that will separate the two elements of hydrogen and oxygen; and HHO cells which will finally convert the separated elements into energy (hydroxyl gas.)

The actual process is the following:

1. Water is introduced to the water reservoir. Usually, there is a particular ratio (depending on many factors like: car make, engine make, and other additional engine components) as to how much water should be added for an amount of gas. Let us just say that for this particular example we will have 1:10 ratio, where 1 is the gas liter and 10 is the water liter.

2. The generator creates an electric spark that eventually heats up the water as it flow from the reservoir to HHO cells. The cells in turn separate the elements of water: hydrogen and oxygen.

3. Oxygen is released as a by product of this process which is less toxic than most fuel emissions.

4. Hydrogen is also a gaseous element which is then mixed with the small amount of gas in the tank. This can be done through the installation of vacuum tubes from the hydrogen producing cells to the actual car engine. The resulting hydrogen-water mixture has enough power to run the car or any light vehicle for a period of time.

There are two areas of concern that affect HHO generator efficiency.

Tips for Controlling Runaway

Runaway: Begins when the electrolyzer starts to overheat. The overheating is caused by it drawing too much current (amps) from the battery. And believe it or not, this starts because of too MUCH conductivity. The hotter the HHO cell/electrolyzer gets, the more current it draws and it just keeps going until... MELTDOWN.

This is just ONE reason it's important FUSE your HHO system. An inline fuse will help to control amperage draw and protect your cell. However, the right way to limit current draw and control runaway is by controlling the CONDUCTIVITY of the electrolyzer itself.

Water alone is a poor conductor. So, a catalyst like baking soda is added to the water inside the fuel cell to improve conductivity. FYI, tap water produces more HHO than distilled water, because tap water has conductive minerals in it. But it's important to note that that the minerals in plain tap water can also erode the electrolyzer anodes and really gunk up your HHO cell.

For our purposes - a consistently high HHO gas output at low heat and current draw - We need to strive for a controlled environment for the most precise control of our HHO fuel cell. Achieving this level of control means we'll be able to tweak the HHO output for maximum gains. We can gain more precise control of the HHO cell by controlling conductivity - by the metal most suitable for HHO electrolyzers, and using the best and water/electrolite mixture inside the unit.

We highly recommend using distilled water to create the most efficient electrolyzer environment.

Electrolyzer Material - Not All Metals Are Created Equal

Forget aluminum as it won't last. Aluminum corrodes very quickly and can short out an HHO cell.

Steel erodes quickly too. And steel gunks up the cell with additional minerals which actually PROMOTES runaway.

The best electrolyzer metal to use is alloy steel. Not platinum steel, either. Remember, we're after efficiency. And the very BEST choice for an efficient HHO electrolyzer is 316L Stainless.

All alloy steel will have some surface impurities, and Stainless is no exception. For this reason, you should 'season' in your your new 316L electrolyzer plates or wires. To do this, drive your vehicle with the HHO system running for about 20 miles. Do this 3 times and then change the water out of the HHO unit. This will clean most of the oils and impurities out of the stainless steel. Factory oils to prevent corrosion make for water muck, so just run the generator as described and change the water. From then on the water/electrolytic should remain quite clean.

Is It Really This Easy - KISS (keep it simple stupid) ?

There are many different HHO generator and electrolyzer designs and MORE emerging daily - and each give different output volume under various conditions. However, with the use of distilled water with 316L stainless steel anodes, you'll be definitely see MPG gains. You can push the gains significantly higher yet by installing O2 sensor spacers, MAP, or EFIE devices. But overall, these efficient HHO electrolyzers are very simple and straight-forward, once you understand how they work.
